Advantages include a more learner-centered learning experience, more opportunities for differentiation and scaffolding, and the chance for students to understand real-world applications of the knowledge they gain in school.

The disadvantages primarily appear when teachers are inexperienced or unqualified. It's easier for the classroom to become rowdy and disorganized in an inquiry-based lesson (that's usually a sign that the lesson wasn't designed well enough to capture student interest) or for students to feel like their teacher is useless (again, reflecting a poorly designed lesson).

Check out the Galileo Educational Network for examples of successfully implemented inquiry-based programs at elementary and secondary levels.
