I know it's the custom in some societies. It would seem very strange and embarrasing to most Westerners! 'Family dogging' .... that is too weird!
(It is usually an older and trusted female member of the bride's family who is entrusted with the task. Evidence of virginity - in the form of blood on the sheet - is often required by the groom's family, too!)

This apparently used to be an old tradition whereby the family witnessed the bride and groom...well...doing what newlyweds do best I guess. The reasons behind this are unclear, but it may be to verify that the bride is actually a virgin by the blood produced from the loss of her hymen.
In some pagan beliefs, the ritual of handfasting (marriage of sorts that holds binding for a year and a day) is followed by a consummation of sorts that is witnessed by the circle. This is not to establish virginity, but to signify the duality of all existence and to celebrate the union of two equal, but opposite, life forces.

No not personally. Around 30 odd years ago my friend got married and the women from his new wife's family were all crowded in the bedroom until he went ape and threw them out.
They waited outside the door and wouldn't leave until the bed sheet had been produced.
He was mortified and I don't think he has ever forgiven them.
Their religion really didn't come into it . It was a tribal thing.
They originally came from Iraq!

I don't know of any major religions that practice this. I have heard that some occultist practice this, if you have to have the consumation of your marriage witnessed by someone.. then I'd start thinking about a new religion.

They still do that? Do you think the family gets off a little bit while watching? Your question makes me sad...i thought that this went out of tradition like in the 1700's.

no but just before we got married, the misses dropped the ring, and whilst she was down there got the fancy, and bobs your uncle. Vicar was a bit upset, but proceeded with the ceremony anyway.

no.and I would never do it.this "act of consumption", by definition, requires privacy and intimacy, which cannot be achieved with Mom, Dad, any of them or both or whatever other family member.sorry, i pity the ones who have to do it because of religion.
