When I turned 30 (six years ago), I had considered giving up wearing jeans because I thought I should try to look more mature and polished, since I was undeniably a grown-up at that point (I presume that a similar feeling may be what prompted your question). Instead of making that change, though, I decided that it was time to acquire some "investment" pieces - timeless things that would become part of my signature style and that I could wear for years (even decades) to come.
A great place to start is with a coat - it will be the first thing that people see you in during much of the year (depending, of course, on where you live). Pick a nice trench coat with a zip-out lining or a wool coat in a neutral color - something non-trendy, please. Pay attention to details (buttons, tailoring, length, etc.) before you choose one. Again, the idea is that you'll be wearing this coat for years.
I think wrap dresses (à la Diane von Furstenberg, though you don't have to buy hers specifically) are a nice idea, too. They're very flattering on a wide range of figures, and women have been wearing them for decades. Buy maybe one in a solid and one in a print.
Think in terms of quality, not quantity, for accessories. A good bag, clean, unfussy jewelry and a couple of nice scarves (cold weather and silk) are important. I also have a fringed cashmere wrap for when it gets cold around the office or on airplanes. I use it often. And when I bought a pashmina, I made sure I didn't buy one with that tell-tale pashmina knotted fringe that looked hopelessly out-of-date the next year. I opted for a red one with just short (1") fringe, so I get the warmth and style without looking as dated.
Depending on your lifestyle, good shoes can be important, but I personally can't bring myself to spend a lot of money on them since I usually destroy them in short order and I don't need dressy or expensive ones for work.
That's a good start. I don't want to go any further than this right now, as I'm not sure this is exactly the kind of answer you were looking for...

Flatter your figure, complement your coloring, and dress your age. A sophisticated look is so much more flattering on adult. If you dress too young or too old, it only makes you look older. If you see it on a lot of high school and college kids, it's probably not a good idea. This includes all the clothing that has the brand name stamped across it.
Spend the money for nice clothing. It's better to have a few great pieces than a wardrobe full of Wal-Mart cheap stuff. The items will last longer, and most likely fit better. You don't even have to spend a ton of money; try department stores and stay out of the Juniors section.
You can even keep up with fashion trends. You don't have to sacrifice style for maturity. It's just a matter of finding the version that's right for you.
Since I don't have a clue about what you look like to suggest styles or colors, try an on line virtual makeover. You can try on different makeup, hairstyles, and clothing to see how it could look on you. Plus, they are just fun to play with :-)

well it all depends on how old you actually look. if you have maintained yourself well and still look young and have a great body... then you really don't need to worry.. dress the way you want n look the way you want... it s all about how you carry yourself and project yourself as a 34 yr old inspite of what you are wearing...theres one thing... if you look ppl in the eye and tlak,,, they'll never look at your clothes...its a fact...
