I presume it's M$ Windows XP which gathers a lot of fat with time. There is nothing quite like a complete reinstall, painful but worth it.

You could try defragmenting the disk and if you use the internet a lot then clear Explorer's cache but this will have little affect.

Examine what programs are in the background and close them. They may be initiated at startup and you should change the startup file.

Get a good program for virus, bot and spyware removal. This may require two programs.

Clean-up. Go to system clean-up an run disk clean-up.

Defragment your disk.

Get more memory.

Archive email.

Do not keep in setting to run the programs during start-up, delete un necessary file, temp internet files, un registered files & etc.
Try Register Machanic software to delete the unnecessary files...

if you do so the system will work faster as always!

Go to start-run, type in msconfig, click on the startup tab-uncheck any programs in there you do not need-then click apply-ok--then go to tools, internet options-delete cookies-clear history-should start faster now..good luck..

try defragging your harddrive or uninstall programs that are not so needed. you can also reduce the settings or reduce the use of resources to optimal setting.

memory and hard drive upgrades usually do the trick.
