My personal feeling is that Muslim headscarves are repulsive and offensive because of the oppressive associations of Islam with regards to women. This is a paradoxical situation. It's like when the white supremacists get police escorts and ACLU representation so they can march in parades. The law protects them, and the sanctity of the law trumps the moral indignation of their presence. Here's an idea... if we must allow this sign of culturally rooted cooperative codependent abuse, we could exercise our rights by refusing to speak to anyone who does not uncover their head and call that an expression of our own faith. Seriously... why not say, "I cannot in good conscience interact with a person bearing a cultural emblem of something I find so morally reprehensible that it interferes with my basic ability to maintain professional courtesy." That seems fair to me. Islamic women, if you are reading this ... you may imagine that your scarf wearing is a sign of your faith and modesty. At a deeper level, please consider that it is an egotistical expression of public piety, and does not merit the harm it does in terms of reinforcing mysoginistic tradition in your own community and creating greater mistrust and division in the larger society.
PS - for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about when I say "oppressive associations of Islam with regards to women," please google "female circumcision", take if from there, and start educating yourselves.

First of all, they do not NEED to be allowed to take the veil off. This is a choice that a Muslim woman has a choice to make. Granted in some countries it is law, but just like it is law in some countries to drive on the left hand side of the road. Would it seem right to you if they were MADE to drive on the right hand ride of the road? These women are not hiding they are making a choice to show love and respect to Allah, just how Christians show their love to God by showing to church on Sunday and giving a monetary donation to the church.

Do you agree that women should take off their underwear and walk in the streets.
That about sums up the muslim womans attitude when you ask her to take off her veil. Try to understand: to her, any part of her body that entices men is the same as the other, therefore she will feel naked and barren when shes forced to unveil.
Very confusing I know, but what can you do? can you put terrorism and or secularism in the same category as clothes?

I agree that Muslim women should be allow to take off their veils, but not forced in public places or there own homes. If on the other hand there in someone elses house then it is a question of weither the head of the house wants them not to wear it.

In front of pupils in schools yes. In other places they may have to be veiled although this is not in the Koran. I have a Japanese theatre mask and when putting it on in play it scared the grandkids and they are not wimps. Took a while to explain this was Japanese theatre. However in schools the Muslim veil doesn't help education ? And teacher won't have the pupils with their hoodies over their faces ?

well it depends on how strictly they view their religion. some women do take off their veils but others continue to wear it as a form of respect, also in other islamic countries, it is sorta compulsory for them to wear it or they will be condemned..so it really depends.
and they should not really be seen as threats or suspects of terrorism because of their dressing..

No i dont think they should be forced to remove thier veils as it is part of their religion. But I must say that I think the reason they wear them is because thier men cant control themselves so the women have to cover every part of their body to safe from them.

If we are a truly multicultural society, we have to accept that there will be women who want to dress wearing a veil.
Surely in any democratic society we have to have tolerance to the needs and rights of others.I have a right to practise my religion as I see fit , as long as it does not interfere with the rights of others. I fail to see how wearing a veil interferes with other people rights.

Of course they should. it hurts me to see them with those on.
But this is not only a question of veil. It's about traditions (arabic traditions more than muslim ones, i would say).
Once they take it off, they have to face looks and judgements from their families, when it's not fists

These women should be able to do as they please.
And also should be safe from those maniacks who would kill them if they take off their veils
BTW I wonder how that custom got started. It sure doesnt come from the Quran
