Submitting your site to a search engine like google ( or any other) is as easy as posting this question.
Before you click on the link below
prepare a summary of what you web site gives. Let that be very very brief.
More instructions are given on the page below
http://www.google.com/addurl/

(Although it says that listing may take as long as...few months, I got the result just the next day! Actually it depends on the crawler schedule.)
And it is FREE!

If you want to get your site listed on the search engine, you've got to get some websites linking to your site. To get started with building your links, perhaps the easiest thing you could do is have your site submitted to various free seo friendly directories online. You'll get some nice easy links that will help get your site indexed by all the top search engines.

I'm only speaking from experience as it does help. It can get quite tiring though to find and submit to all the directories out there so you could perhaps get someone to do it for you. I used the site: directorymaximizer.com - they were very good although you can also find plenty of freelancers on forums.digitalpoint.com who do a pretty good job as well.

The cheapest way is to wait, have your keywords in the correct meta-tags, and have active links to and from other sites.

Don't believe any other promises to get you a good google ranking for money. They're just trying to rip you off.

1. Build good and interesting site for users.
2. Get strong links from trusted sites. If you can get strong links from trusted sites in your theme, it's cool.

Never pay for ranking. Run your domain through AddMe.com and then sit back and let google spider it. Get your metatags organised.
