Because unless you accept that you have no power over your illness, you have no hope of recovery.
The first step in the 12 step program is:-
We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable
By standing up and admitting to yourself and to other people that you are an alcoholic, you can then try and overcome the problem.
It may sound silly to an outsider, but it does take a lot of courage and a very long journey till you get to the time where you can stand up and say that you are an alcoholic.
You can sit and observe meetings without taking part for as long as you want, there is no pressure to contribute. Also, what is said in the meeting, stays in the meeting - you don't need to worry about it getting out. People from all walks of life attend AA meetings, from Doctors, Lawyers and Teachers.

Its only in the meeting that they reveal their identity & problems & get help from professionals & other members. Normally, one wouldnt want to be known outside the meeting as an alcoholic so the indentity of members is not revealed to outsiders.
