Because most societies then had very simple clothing, usually loose 'dresses' - very few societies had trousers at that time for either male or females. So the common form of dress were long robes, which would have been impractical for fighting or short skirts - usually worn with a 'wrapped' thong type garment underneath to hold their bits in place.

Those weren't skirts, they were strips of leather. The rationale behind it was so that it you were fighting someone and they lunged at you with their sword, the sword would stick into the leather but be deflected away from your leg because the thing that it stabbed moved. A spear or knife would go right through traditional pants and right into your flesh and the leather strip 'skirt' prevents that.

So that when they swung their swords in the ampitheatre, they'd have a counterbalancing pendulum hanging loose down below! lol... Tut Tut!! EVERYONE wore skirts then - not just soldiers. Pants were only invented MUCH later..

It's the whole design of it yo! Something like the scottish.I know mostly about the mythology and not the fasahion tastes.Like I know Mars is the god of war and slaugter.
