i started weaning him at 5 and half months coz he was needing somthing more. but now im a bit confused as to how much he needs to drink. i know his milk should still be the main part of his diet, but for how long? im feeding him solids 3 times a day with a bottle of 8 ounces. he has a bottle of 8 ounces five times a day. is this too much? he does drink water aswell.

the doctor knows best, so ask him/her. Or call a nurse line and ask them. Formula was the most important part of my child's life until a year- then we switched to whole milk. Our baby let us know when he was hungry. We would feed our baby rice cereal in morning and at night at that age, fruits and veggies for lunch, and bottles with the rice cereal, imbetween thoes feedings, he just wasn't always wanting one after fruits and veggies. Also, he didn't take 8 oz. Occassionally he would, but I think the doctors said no more than 32 oz of formula a day.... so 40 oz is a lot, but ask your doctor to make sure!

Well, I'm going to say this really depends on your baby if he will take too much or not. Every other response has said he cant over-eat, but I vehemently refute that assumption. Why would there be so many obese babies out there if this was the case? My girl could drink herself to the point of throwing up, which is why bottles can be dangerous to some babies as they DONT stop when they should be full. Perhaps this is a result of her being breastfed with just the occasional bottle, and she doesnt realise she gets twice as much milk in half the time, I really couldnt say. In adults it takes 20 min for that feeling of being full to set in which is why we are suppose to take our time eating - does anyone know if this could be the same for babies? Their tummies are smaller of course so maybe that isnt true for them, I have no idea, I just know my daughter very much can pig herself out.
I agree that milk should remain the main supply of calories for your little one, and I would think solids 3 times a day is a lot for a 6mth old. Even until a yr old breastmilk or formula should remain at least half of their calorie intake. In France the standard is at least 500ml, which I think equates to 17oz, from 6mths until 1yr... so if that math is right then I would think 5 bottles of 8oz is a lot in and of itself, not counting the solids. I would have thought if he was just getting milk he'd be taking around 34oz a day. How is his weight gain? That's the best way to tell of course, because there are some babies that are very active and can burn off all those calories, then others become little marshmallow babies.
Just my opinion, the best one to ask is your pediatrician who can help you come up with his daily menu, but I'd say try taking away one of his bottles as that seems like a lot to me.

at least 6-8 ounces 4-6 times a day. Our baby is at 9 months and she is just now eating 1/2 food 1/2 bottle.

From what I have been told, usually around 6 months, she should be drinking, 30-32 ounces a day with a little solid, But, every child is different, depending on size, weight, etc. SO, I would ask my childs doctor, if you have any doubt on how much to feed him. Also, never interduce whole milk, without asking your childs doctor, because in the long run it may cause stomach issues later in life, if interduced to early.

You're doing the right thing. Don't worry too much about it. He'll drink as much as he will want and eat as much as well. My son was still drinking 5 bottles of milk a day at 12 months but ate everything in sight. All children are different but if you notice that he's a bit constipated then try giving him a bit more fruit but other than that, keep doing what you're doing

My twins are 10 months old, I weaned them at 6 months as they were premature but anyway, once I started weaning they were still having 5 bottles of 7oz a day, around 8 months this went down to 3 bottles inbetween their meals

I did breakfast, dinner and tea with solids and bottles in between about every 5 hours instead of 4, he still had a bottle at night time to settle him down, as long as he is taking it keep him on it as my son decided he wanted to stop having milk at about 9 months so i had to then make hot chocolate etc with his milk

When you say milk you mean breast milk or formula right?

A baby should be on formula or breast milk until he is one....even if the formula is in a cup.

Ask your doctor...at 5 months, your child didn't need something more, or at least that didn't require weaning...breastmilk is perfect and it could have been supplemented with solids...people do it all the time.

32 ounces is the cut off so 8 x 5 = 40 so it's too much

yes that is to much if you are still giving him three meals a day then cut the size of the bottle by half ,making sure he has the night time one, then gradually cut out the day time bottle ,he will let you know when he dont want the evening bottle,
