I understand the reasons behind getting physically tired, i.e. burning off food and using up energy but why do we get mentally tired? I'm talking about when we are concentrating on something for a long period of time and we find it draining. What bodily resource are we using up for us to get tired? I hope my question makes sense!

I just wanted to add that I was looking for a scientific answer, not just a 'because we are concentrating' type answer. I want to know concentrating makes us mentally tired because like I said physical activity makes us physically tired because we are expending energy. If anyone has a more in depth answer it would be appreciated. Thanks.

maybe this helps. 90% to 95% of our daily brain activity is being controlled by our sub-conscious. When we do things that are unfamiliar and challenging we begin to use our conscious mind which takes more energy.

The answer may lie in sleep. When we sleep, especially during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep we dream. The contents of dreams and the length of dreams which are somewhat equally spaced in time take fragments of the day and weave them into almost nonsensical episodes. They somehow disposition lose ends like clearing an adding machine before the new days business. Perhaps a great deal of concentration generates a great deal of lose ends that become a burden that must be carried until rest refreshes. My family ran weekly antique auctions and when I was a tot I messed with the interesting mechanical adding machine. They were elated when the auction produced an unexpected $20,000 until they discovered that my aunt had forgotten to clear the machine. Hope that helps a little.

we get mentally tired because of several reasons. ;
01) the squirell on the tredmill in our head can't keep up.
02) the same squirell is malnurished.
03) again the same squirell has been overworked without rest for too long and needs a vacation to relax and enjoy life for a bit.
04) you are stressing over too many things at once, slow down and relax, do something fun to disengage from the moment and come back to it when relaxed.
05) placing too much stress or importance on non important issues, relax life is too short and everything will come to you in due time.
06) the squirell needs a mate to help it relax.
07) and totally serious this time , it may be caused due to eye strain, check with an optomatrist and or md to be sure, if undiagnosed or treated it could lead to more serious health problems. it can also be as a result of a poor diet or lack of physical activity. there are many legitamite possibilitys, go to md and have a full physical to be sure. never mess around with your health. this may be your last reincarnation , make it last as long as possible, good luck and seriously hope that this helps !
