Drug and Alcohol abuse is a choice. Help them help themselves as if they do not want help you cannot help them. As for respect, it is something that is earned, not given freely. They do not deserve respect. Compassion maybe, pity probably, but do not ask me to respect a person who destroys their body and mind. Do not ask me to respect someone who not only screws up their own life but their families and friends life's as well. Stopping may be hard but it is still a choice that they made and continue to make.

spare change, a coffee. twist off caps. try not to let them starve or freeze to death in the winter. Extra money will just go for booze or drugs, but a dry pair of socks, a tuque or gloves might prevent frostbite.
