I've got a pretty tight budget, but i have a job lined up in Sydney. I just want a small place to stay for a few months (6). If you know of any smaller cities outside of Sydney that may have cheaper rates, pleace let me know. Any websites with information would also be helpful!

travelling around sydney can be a pain at peak hours (which are pretty much all the daylight hours and then some), so take care that you take into account travel time (as much as 2 hours each way from some parts) and cost - what you save in accomodation you can easily lose in travel expense.
personally, I was very happy to not live in sydney anymore - but you have fun now!

I live in Sydney. So here goes....

Your best option would be to find buddies to live with. Rent is paid weekly in Sydney and is expensive. Its difficult to find a studio or one-bedroom apartment in downtown Sydney or its inner suburbs for under $400 or $500 per week.

Dont wonder too far away from Downtown Sydney..... as its not safe. Australian cities are the opposite of American cities downtown areas are safer than suburban areas. My advice is to live somewhere in the Northern Suburbs it is safe and clean there (and a little bit cheaper) and to avoid other areas of Sydney especially South-West and West of Sydney as they are high in crime, gang infested and especially not safe for tourists given the type of people that live there (you will understand once you live in Sydney for a while and are truly exposed to it).

Check out www.realestate.com.au it is a really good site for rental property in Sydney and all over Australia. It will give you an idea of prices and what to expect. Try look at areas like St. Leonards, Chatswood and Epping for a place to live. They are in the North and not far from downtown Sydney.
