His original culture could go on the back burner for a time, so to speak, but although he might fit very well into the culture he is in, still, in the back of his mind, his own culture stays intact.
However, as is the situation with children of couples from the Middle East, who move to the US and then move back when the kids are teenagers....these children rarely if ever, adjust to their "own" culture, since although they are Middle Eastern by creed...well they are just as American as Apple Pie.

Usually that happens its called assimilation which is basically adopting patterns and characteristics of the dominant culture. Changes in styles of dress, values and attitudes even speech take place. it is a way to move up the social strata and escape prejudice and discrimination that follow foreigners who do not assimilate.

not always..ofcourse you'll accept many things from new culture, but i think one can never forget his/her roots. something always will hold you back and returns you to where you truly belong. it's a very very strong bond and i don't think it breaks that easily.
