Yes, the stamp duty is a tax on the paperwork, not the property itself. You can usually negotiate to get it paid by the developer, but as always, ask yourself why they're willing to do it, does that mean the house is overpriced to start with?

Some new build companies pay it for you, but I think the threshold is under 175k for no stamp duty.

Yes you do...... you don't think Gordon Brown is going to miss a chance of taking more of your money for 'nothing' do you? I mean its not important that you have worked hard for it. Think of all of the worthy causes he can spend it on like, Prescott, the wars, helping all of the new arrivals to our country, they all need new homes and benefits you know....... the list is endless so pay up and make him happy and keep you poor and in your place so the government can keep you under control.
