Here's one more way. Medicare should pay for nursing home stays, or an affordable supplement should be offered by the government as nursing home or continuing care insurance.

Medicare quits paying for nursing home care after 60 days, and relatives have to sell the person's home, car and other assets. When these funds are used up, the elderly person has to go on Medicaid which is largely funded by the states. The Medicaid nursing homes are frequently dirty and shabby, and this is an ignoble end to a working person's life.

I think family, friends and neighbors could offer the elderly more than the government.

Visit them, listen when they talk, make sure they have healthy meals, take them on outings, share your children and pets with them, take them to doctor visits, help them with finances, phone calls and the the frustrating things they must deal with. i.e., filling out forms, helping them understand what benefits and rights they do have. If they are being overlooked by some government agency take up their cause.

The Government can never take the place of common everyday people. The Government is a lonely island.

Have their kids support them so that the "kids" learn to save for retirement and old age.

Those without kids can evict all the illegals living in subdized low cost housing, use their food stamps, demand free lunches from the schools and go to the head of the line of illegals waiting in ER's for free medical care...

increase their monthly social security checks
better health plans
a monthly issue of food stamps
[the government has cheese and other food items in stock and should give it out to seniors] [back in the 60's and 70's they used to give out and no longer do this]
