I have a virus / Trojan horse on my laptop. It works fine, but SO MANY pop-ups keep coming up. So far I've run ad-aware SE, counterspy and avast antivirus, but they're still coming up. Can anyone help?

Try downloading windows defender from the Microsoft website. Microsoft antispyware was actually better but defender has preceded it. AVG antivirus is also another very good and free one you can download from the grisoft.com website. Not every antivirus or anti spyware program picks up every virus or trojan. Good luck! Another thing you can do is search 'Windows free live scan' in yahoo, this will bring up a link the the Microsof website where you can do a scan of your computer and it will check for any problems and remove them. It also fixes registry problems and speeds up your computer!

Usually to clear this type of trojan you need to re-install windows which takes about 2 hours. You will probably spend more time than that finding, installing and running adware and spyware and still end up having to do it anyway.

Backup your data files and setup files. Boot from your operating system cd. Mine is xp pro so with that as an example, reinstall selecting format to replace the operating system.

Then install your laptop setup files, they are drivers for LAN, USB, Keyboard, Display, Mouse, CD or DVD drive.

Install your printer and backup software.

Restore your program setup files and run them.

Run your software from CD's like MS Office, Anti virus etc.

Then you have a new and perfectly clean installation, free of viruses, in 2 hours with tea breaks in between while the computer copies files etc.

Hi there,

I'm shocked that no-one has recommended Prevx1 yet?! This program has been reported as having the strongest protection and removal capabilities of all security software on the market today - so this should be the first program you try.

I would also recommend that people contemplate moving away from Spybot and Adaware. These programmes used to be good a couple of years ago, but are now protecting their users from less than 20% of the threats out there.

1) Download Spyboy - Search & Destroy from the link in the source part. After you installed it, also don't forget to download the updates..

2) In the Add/Remove menu, remove everything you saw suspicious, such as toolbars etc.

3) Click Start>>Run>>type "msconfig"
in the very last menu you'll see some checkboxes. Disable all of them except useful ones.

4) Finally, restart your computer and open in the safe mode. Run Spyboy - Search & Destroy and clean your computer.

Hiburak has supplied the soloution I believe, however here are some other things you may wish to include on your PC to keep you protected,

Antiviral. (free)

AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com

Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.

Anti-spyware (all free)

O.K. Some quick links to get you out of trouble

Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com

Listed programs have been carefully tested by the 2-spyware.com research center and successfully passed our strict tests. All the products in Anti-Spyware category really work, do not deceive the user by producing false positives and cannot damage a compromised computer while eliminating found malware. However, it is important to know that not all of them are recommended for daily use. Each spyware remover in the list comes with a review describing its positive sides, drawbacks and impression it left. Such review also includes program screenshots, information about its price, implemented features, performance and general effectiveness. We rate tested programs by giving marks from 1 to 100. The higher mark a spyware remover gets the more effective it is. Please carefully read each review, pay attention to the rating mark a program got and read comments published by other visitors. This will help you to make a wise choice and compare your current anti-spyware program with other modern solutions on the market.

If you cannot find a particular spyware remover in anti-spyware category, take a look on the category of corrupt tools.
