I read the 7th Habit of Highly Effective People, as well as the 8th Habit, From Effectiveness to Greatness.

The biggest thing that I learned from 7 Habits was the seek first to understand, then to be understood philosophy. I liked that - sometimes I don't think about what others are trying to convey but just to get my point across.

The other big one was the win-win or no deal philosophy. You don't have to walk into a negotiation and come out with an answer or solution. Sometimes, the best solution is no solution and choose to go on your merry way.

With the 8th Habit, it was the Indian Talking Stick scenario that captured me and the Empower the Knowlege Worker that really got me.

Indian Talking Stick summarized: He who has the stick, has the floor without interruption.

Empower the Knowlege Worker summarized: Ask the people around you, on your team, or who ACTUALLY do the job what they think about the job, what they would do to improve the job, what they think would make their job more effecient, then implement the ideas that make sense. You will see a difference in the team.

I read it...oh, over 10 years ago for a college human relations course. The book was the foundation of the course. That course was the most memorable of my life and taught me the most. I still use what I learned from the course and the book in my daily life. Prioritizing and putting first things first, recognizing an emotional "bank" system of deposits and withdrawals with interpersonal relationships, and seeking first to understand. Without a doubt, a *highly* recommended read for everyone. (I'm convinced the world would be a better place if schools required it.)
