Because a man needs a woman and a woman needs a man for support in all aspects, more than anything a man needs to feel loved, accepted, honored, respected, and something to look forward to, if he finds the right woman, he has found a good thing.
The right woman and man can enhance and enlighten each other's life and together as a great team, can make great things happen, the most important thing for a man is his occupation (part of being the provider) the stronger sex, a man has a lot of needs which must be met, more than a woman (women have strong needs as well, however, women are stronger in a different sense. IE, childbearing, etc. )
if a man is a successful man, in love with a woman and for some reason the woman leaves him or ends the relationship, he will have the hardest time coping with it, sure he'll try to pull himself together, however it's been a proven fact that it is more difficult for men to deal with that sort of situation.
A successful man needs a strong woman of substance in order to help him in life and be a part of his success, it's all about fulfillment, (part of it has to come from within and through wholeness first) knowing what it takes. The appropriate woman can definitely compliment his life

Ideally, each partner has his/her own backbone, and by agreement they should offer each other support as needed. The reason the saying keeps coming up as you've quoted it in the title to your question, is simply because that saying has been in circulation for many years--decades, I'm sure.
It is far more insulting to men than to women. If there is a woman behind every successful man, that means that no man can be successful unless he has the support of a woman. It does not make any statement about whether women can be successful, or whether they need any support to attain success.
Fortunately, society HAS evolved considerably, and continues to do so.

there is a woman behind every successful man. we are a little bit more sly sometimes and some prefer to stay out of the limelight. i do understand how you may see this as negative, but there will be a time when it becomes clear. it is actually referring to the fact that often, men would never be where they are without the help and guidance of their wives (or other women in their lives). men are becoming women's backbones in the present time, and surely these sayings will change with time; however, it isn't as negative of a phrase as some believe it to be.

I know what you're getting at, its true in many cases that a successful woman is supported by her man, but society has been male dominated in most cultures for thousands of years, equality of thought is going to take an extremely long time, it could take another thousand years before there's any change.
But isn't there a woman behind every successful man?

I blame it on the fact that the world still condems men for staying home with the children and still isn't paying women the same amount that the average man is getting paid. So in a sence as far as family goes it still makes sense if the options were him or me to stay home, it would still be me because he'd get paid more. But we need to evolve and let the men stay home after they raise our pay. Screw that they need to raise both womens pay and minimum wages due to you can't feed your family off 7.00 an hour. The guy that did that study on Mcdonalds and making someone obese by eating bigmacs everyday, did another experiment where he lived off minimum wages and couldn't affard to feed himself let alone his family. Either raise the wages or drop the prices of basic needs for life. Gas, Milk, Meat, Diapers, and clothes are going outragously high in price. this is just another way for the rich to make the poor die off. We need to stop worring about why people say stupid things about men and women and take the time to care for your community because I bet there is a family out their not making ends meet and kids in our own towns dieing of starvation because the world is too worried about the war and who's doing what to some celebrety...when we have americans starving with food all around them that they can't buy because our congress won't raise minimum wages.

Because at child bearing and birth, the woman contributed much more than the man. The man's role was only incidental. We are talking about comparing 9 months to nano seconds. So who do you think should take the credit?

Because a man needs a woman to depend on, and a man can't have a successful family if he doesn't have a woman.

its just because only the woman who he really loves, can make him change or improve more... that he can do things he thought he could never do..the impossible becomes possible...because of the word LOVE.
in that case, if a woman is supportive, then the man is likely to achieve a very commendable goal that he wants to reach as long as there is a woman who is there for him.

By own experiences, seeing prove in my own family and friends. The woman makes the man what he is, on the end of the day. My one uncle was a very rich dude, one bright future, very neat and very clean. He met a girl married her, she drank a lot, bad lady, filthy. Today his just like her, when I man loves a woman, it changes him good or bad. You know what to tell you the truth, visa verse. That's Way they say, be careful how you choose your friends.
