Sounds like something a parent told you.
It's not necessary. It's a choice, and these days many people are choosing not to marry.
Don't worry.

If yo are not yet mature enough to truly love one person and "forsake all others," then don't get married. But there comes a time in life when it is much more pleasant to stop playing the dating game and just settle down with the person you love. Marriage is established to give legal status to that love. It is a sign of serious commitment. If you're not committed, don't get married and DON'T HAVE KIDS! People who are not committed enough to each other to get married should not make babies! Children need stability and security, and that is attained by making the marriage commitment. But if you truly love someone, you should marry that person even if children are not planned, as it gives you recognition as a couple and legal rights to things like health care decisions.

It isn't!
Marriage is a religious festivity.
People get married due to their velief in archaic teachings from organised religions, or because they think marriage will provide some type of security against their spouse cheating on them!
Of course, mariage is supposed to be a celebration of love between 2 people, and it is a beautiful concept, but it has been unfortunatly corrupted by organised religions and "jesus-freaks" as well as puritanical hypocrites worldwide.
So mariage isn't necessary... My "hubby" and I aren't reconised as officially married because neither of us believe in organised religions so we can't get married in religious environments.
But we have been together since 1992, live together, have tons of raw and wild sex, and are very happy like this!

If you want to have a family, it is then necessary to get married
legally. Your children raised by you will be legal and heirs to your
property and estate.
However, there are those who don't intend to be married, but
they wish to stay and copulate together for their convenience
and enjoyment. When one of them dies, the other partner is not
entitled to any property or estate left by the deceased, as they
are not married legally as husband and wife.
Also, if they have a child, he or she may not be entitled to the
claim because of the illegitimate status.
