if you have determination and drive and some good materials, I don't think you need a teacher.

It depends on several things. What instrument do you want to play? I have found that guitar was fairly easy to teach myself. However, if you are planning on learning a classical instrument such as violin, cello, etc... then I HIGHLY suggest that you get a teacher. Those instruments are all about technique, and if you don't have the right technique, then you will have a hard time making it sound good at all.

Also, how dedicated are you? Will you practice everyday? I know a self-taught guitarist who is amazing, but the only reason he got there was because he practiced everyday for hours upon end. I also know some other self-taught players who are not so good. That is because they aren't willing to put the time into the instrument and learn new things.

Whatever you are trying to learn, I recommend having a teacher. That way you always have someone to ask when you need help, and someone to guide you when you hit walls and don't know how to improve anymore. But, teacher or no teacher, you will never get good if you don't practice and dedicate yourself.

depends if you want to read music. If not it depends on your natural ability and your ear for music.Wouldn't hurt to try a few lessons to see if you like it.If you hate it but you still want to play then you don't need it.If you get stuck, then you might need a couple pointers and your back on your own. Having a teacher the whole time your learning only teaches you how to be like every other taught musician. In the end you'll have to throw all you learned away and create your own thing.Alot of people say I'm an amazing Musician and i never had a lesson. It's more about loving what you do, then you'll practice all the time cause you want to and you'll get great.

Actually, it is very very important when we want to learn to play an instrument. If we had a teacher, the could tell us if we haev done wrong or had to do some certain thing that would make what we play sound nicer.

I know that after I had learned a lot of basic stuff from teachers, that I was able to learn some advanced things on my own, but I always found that when I had an instructor that I felt much more challenged. Being able to teach yourself things is awesome, but it's just as cool to learn from another person's experience and prespective.

not that important.....you can access several lesson books and dvds from your public library for free and become very skilled at playing any instrument and have the rights to brag that you were self taught because you truely never had an actual teacher present ; )....good luck

It is very important. Other than for just pure guidance and regimen, you will teach yourself bad habits if you try to teach yourself. I learnt about my music teacher from the music department at the local university as many grad students teach part-time. There are also many music schools in most communities. Check the yellow pages.
