Anything tied to a string, be it a pencil, a ring, or a pretty stone you happen to like can be an indicator. Some say circles mean a girl and lines a boy, or counter clock-wise and clockwise can tell.
The thing is, is that it's mostly your subconcious doing the moving. Decide on what is going to be the meaning for it and just relax. Don't try to force it to go either direction. (A *little* bit of movement is ok). Don't let anyone else do it, their perceptions will change the sign. Your own body knows what it is, and will tell you if you're open to it. But of course, if you're hoping for a girl (or boy) it might influence it a little.

There are too many to mention and i am afraid they are all wrong - most said i was having a girl but at my last ultrasound we found out we are having a boy - i am ecstatic as i wanted a boy and kept looking for an old wives tale to tell me that is what i would have.
The chinese calendar - wrong
craving sweet foods means a girl - wrong
ring test - wrong
i can say that i think i am carrying low and i wee more that i ever thought possible - other than that i cant help you - its fun guessing but i would rely on the u/s over any of the tales as that is exactly what they are
good luck - hope you get a healthy baby no matter what the gender

I found both the ring test and the heart beat both wrong for my first child.
I did hear while I was pregnant with my second, that a Chinese old wives tale said that if you take more care of your appearance during your pregnancy you are carrying a boy and if little or no effort is made you are carrying a girl. Looking back over all three of my pregnancies I certainly wanted to look nicer during the time I was carrying the boys and I certainly had a couldn't care less attitude when carrying my daughter.
At the end of the day all three of mine were healthy kids and great to have. I hope everything goes well for you.

I have heard the one about the heartbeat before. My husband's cousin is a paediatric nurse, and when she was pregnant she said that the heartbeat was fast, so she was having a girl. Guess what, she had a boy. Both my pregnancies were very different, like where i gained weight and everything, and I have 2 boys. I didn't do anything to try and find out beforehand-any baby is fantastic. Just enjoy the rest before it's born, because you won't get any peace for at least 18 years afterwards! Good luck, I'm very excited for you!:)

well i have three boys and a girl all of them had about the same heart rate so that wasn't right, also the way you carry didn't matter, i was always all belly and some were high and some were low. i did have the wedding ring thing done and it said i would have three boys and then a girl(at the time i only had two boys), and that was right, but that might have just been dumb luck. i do know that in my family if it's a boy you usually aren't sick and if it's a girl you are. with my boys i only wanted junk food and with my daughter i ate only healthy and always wanted to go eat at the really nice restuarants.

I heard about the one that if you have heartburn that the baby will have a lot of hair. And that if you carry a baby low then it will be a boy. And that girls come out quicker because they want to get started talking.
The only old wives tale about determining the sex is the one where a pencil hangs from a string above the abdomin and if the pencil circles one way it will be a boy, if the pencil circles the other way it will be a girl.

None of those are true, we did the heart beat test , my babys heart rate has always been in the 150's and were having a boy, the chinese birth chart was accurate for us, but not for 2 of my friends, I hear its 99 % accurate though, but found in my experience the only way to tell is with the ultrasound.

Yes, if it's a girl then the heartbeat will be faster than 140 beats per minute and for a boy it will be lower than 140. In general, when you have a boy you carry low and all out the front and for a girl it's high and all around. Good luck with whatever you have though!

There is one I have heard that says if it's a girl you will go off dairy products. My sister couldn't even bear a drop of milk in her tea when she was pregnant with my niece.
Also there is the Chinese Gender Chart
http://www.justformumz.co.uk/genderpredictor.html
It has been 100% accurate on my 3 children, my sister's 2 and lots and lots of friends.
Whatever it turns out to be will be perfect anyway, so best wishes and farewell to sleep for the next 5 years!

I used to be told by everyone that if your bump sticks out a lot and is rounded it is a girl, and if it is more spread and flatter, it is a boy. I don't know how on earth this could be true, but have been told it so often by older people that it definately qualifies as an old wives tale!.
