A footnote is a note of text placed at the bottom of a page in a book or document. The note comments on and may cite a reference for part of the main body of text.

Footnotes appear at the bottom (i.e. foot) of printed pages and are used to indicate the source of quotations and information obtained from sources--magazines, newspapers, videos, websites, books, etc. Some writers also use them to include additional information that would interrupt the flow of the text. Footnotes were always a major pain in the days of typing reports because sometimes one would run out of room on the page for the required footnotes and end up having to retype the whole page. Now most instructors will accept the use of "end notes," which contain the same information, but appear at the end of the report before the bibliography.

Footnote is description of any word/term appearing in the text but it does not have a direct concern with the text. Had it been written as a part of the sentence, the flow would get disrupted. For example:
Rosy is my daughter. She was born on 10th September*

______________
Foot note: 10th Sept. is the death anniversary of so - and- so.
