For the Indian Police Service, there are two modes of recruitment. One by promotion from amongst the eligible officers from the State Police. The other mode is direct recruitment. The selection is made by the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi. It is based a common selection process made by the commission for IAS and allied central services. You have to be a graduate and have the requisite the physical standards. The selection consists of the written examination and interview. The written examination consists of a two tier arrangement. First there is a Preliminary Examination, which is a qualifying examination. Those who are screened in this exam, will appear for the Main Examination. Those who qualify in the Main will be interviewed. The Selection is rather rigorous. And who aspire for IPS find the exam tough and competitive.

Apart from all other criterion one should be an sc/st or other backward class candidate. If one has a family member in the cadre it is better. If one has an Sitting MP as relative the chances are still better. Last but least if one has sufficient money to purchase all the important selection committee members it would be ideal
