I have to be the one who bares bad news to you, but yes this is exactly how this type of thing happens, it has just recently happened to me, on Monday evening, I opened a question on here, and looked at a link he posted, and there were 2 attachments, one was a BACKDOOR that provides potential openings to gain access to your PC and the other is a RAT Remote Administration Tool this is used to control your PC from somewhere else, and now I am having real problems, this persons profile name is mama_mama9197 on yahoo answers so don't open anything he posts, and be careful of anything else that you open, this guy is from Jordan and has hijacked my PC, he firstly took my passwords, after trying to gain my access back he started to send me error messages, I could only reply to him by typing on my computer screen, I couldn't see what I was typing but he could, I played cool with him and he gave me my password back, after that I had to do some real changes to my PC, I havn't gained it back properly, but I am getting there, its taking its time, but I will beat this *****. Take care on the PC and I hope you don't have too many problems

dont do that, dont ever accept any file over any conversation window in Yahoo, msn, icq etc weather it be a .exe extension, .pid, scr, . anything lol.. (Only if you 100% trust and know this person and you are understanding of what file extensions are and which is which)
It is possible to take over someones computer by sending them a file, because the file they send may be a "trojan virus" and those are used as back doors to your computer without you knowing.
hope this helps.

Maybe he can access to your computer if the virus is a Trojan Horse.
You should install a firewall and an anti-virus.
I recommend a hardware firewall best, but if you can't afford it, try at least a software firewall. They are some very good (Kaspersky, Norton...) but not very cheap. A good one for free is Zonealarm. You can find it on www.zonelabs.com
For the anti-virus, try also a licensed one (Kaspersky is best, Norton is good too, but heavy on memory).
Again, if you can only afford a free one, try AVG Anti-virus, available for free at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/35234/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Yes, but only if you open (view; execute; double-click on) any of the files that have been sent to you. If you just delete them without opening, you're safe.
