Aside from time zones, it depends on your latitude. The farther north you are, the later it sets in the summer, and the earlier in the winter. In northern cities like Seattle and Minneapolis, peak sunset (summer solstice) is around 9:15 pm local time and earliest sunset (winter solstice) is around 4:15 pm local time.

In southern latitudes, which are closer to the equator, these extremes are closer together. In cities like Miami, FL and Brownsville, TX, peak sunset (summer solstice) occurs around 8:15 pm local time and earliest sunset (winter solstice) will occur around 5 pm local time.

Between solstices, the time of sunset gets gradually later/earlier day by day and on the equinoxes (spring and fall) sunset is around 6:30 pm local time, regardless of where you are located.

Also, a few areas do not observe daylight savings time. In those areas the summer sunset is an hour earlier than what I've posted.

It varies a lot from season to season. In the summer it sets at around 10 p.m., in December it sets at 4 p.m. in the afternoon ... which bites!

Of course Alaska is different, there in winters it's dark ALL THE TIME for months, except when the sun creeps above the horizon for an hour or so. In June, it's light ALL DAY!!

In Northern Alaska, the sun never sets in midsummer, and never rises in midwinter. In Hawaii, sunset varies less than 1 hour from 1800 (1900 Dayight Savings Time). Below is a link you may find interesting.
