i've heard it's craters,a reflection of earth..does anyone really know for sure??????

The dark and relatively featureless lunar plains are called maria, Latin for seas, since they were believed by ancient astronomers to be water-filled seas. They are actually vast ancient basaltic lava flows that filled the basins of large impact craters. The lighter-colored highlands are called terrae. Maria are found almost exclusively on the Lunar nearside, with the Lunar far side having only a few scattered patches

actually it is the smoother areas that look darker. the areas inside craters look dark from dust as well as being in shadow. If you go to NASA site they have a lovely program called worldwind for you that shows the moon, mars and earth in very nice detail. it is like google earth to operate.

craters created from fragments of space matter that hit the Moon way back when the deeper the crater the darker the spot depending on light refraction cause don't forget its all spinning so light levels change as it all spins
