It would be quicker and easier to start with those that don't play -
so .... add the number of illegal immigrants
plus ... the soccer players ....
minus the US population
oh - add the 25,000 Americans in Europe active in the 5 separate football leagues and NFL Europe
and that'll be your number...
about 8 US Americans have never played football...
and they will
it's just a matter of getting them to the games...they are busy being Bilionaires.

Well, the USA does play rugby. It's obviously just not at the same level as American football. We'd obviously be better than we are now, because our players would all be full-time pros instead of part-time amateurs. But rugby has been such a deeply ingrained part of the culture in places like New Zealand, Australia, and England for so long, I still think we'd be at a disadvantage. Having the resources doesn't always equal success on the field. Just look at MLS -- professional soccer players, but I think the Europeans laugh at us. Man U came over here a few months ago and destroyed the Seattle Sounders in an exhibition match.

I'll answer differently. 11. In the USA, 11 people play on an American football team (at a time).

I'm not sure if wrecker's numbers are correct but they sound pretty good for a guess. Don't forget youth football. You could probably take the high school number and double that for kids from age 5-14.

At the high school level there are approximately 28 million boys in football. At the division 1-A college level there are about 12,000 boys in football. At the NFL level there are about 1,800 men in football. Of all the young men in high school football, there is one in 16,000 who will make it to the NFL.

I agree the question was vague, but there's just under 300million people in the ENTIRE US dude, 4billion is ~2/3 of the world. Watch your numbers there.
