That is a long time to be on a plane for a 9 year old. Can he amuse himself the whole time? It's hard for an adult to keep occupied for hours like that. Besides, he will probably have to change planes someplace. He will need to carry a backpack with games and books or what ever he will be doing on the plane. Does he take any medications? Does he know how to take them himself? With all of the restrictions now, it is very hard to pack snacks for him. He would need a meal on the plane.

Aside from that, you will have to pay someone to keep an eye on him. They are not going to babysit him. A person will have to turn him over to the airlines on the west coast. They need to know who will be picking him up on the east coast.

You will have to contact the airlines to find out what their policies are. Cost and policies vary with the different airlines.

Personally, I think he is too young to travel alone. It's just too long a trip. And what about layovers? Or if the plane is delayed because of weather? Or (I hope not) the connecting flight is cancelled? These are things you need to discuss in detail with the airlines.

What about you going out there to visit him till he is older and more mature?
