It's a song about childhood innocence lost. The song was widely rumored to be about smoking marijuana, but that's not true at all.

Puff the Magic Dragon was a song written by Leonard Lipton and Peter Yarrow. It was sung by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963. The land is Honah Lee. It is about a child named Jackie Paper who is friends with the imaginary Puff the Magic Dragon. However, Jackie grows up and leaves behind childhood things, including Puff. It is a very popular song with children. However, due to the fact that many people in the 60's believed that it was about smoking marajuana - it became almost an anthem to the drug crowd. But the writers and the singers have denied that it in any way was about drugs. There are a few children's cartoons and short movies that have been based on the song.

Well actually Puff The Magic Dragon was apparently said to be one of those songs like "Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan, where the songwriter makes it seem like he/she is singin about one thing when they´re actually singin about drugs. They had to disguise it, because drugs was a taboo topic and wasnt allowed to be talked bout much less sung about. So from what i have heard, and if this is true, also from what i can decipher from the song, its seems to be about puffing the "magic dragon", in other words, smoking weed. And Hanalee´s is like a metaphor for the land (in your head) that you go to when you get high.

"Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff, and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff" is a reference to Jackie Paper´s addiction to the drug, and also how he traded alot of things to get it.

"One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more, And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar" is another reference to how the story ends. Basically Jackie smartens up and quits, and the drug doesnt have a hold of him anymore.

But you know, in all honesty, i am not sure if its really about that, cuz it could very well be just a childrens song, that has been misintrepreted alot. The line "A dragon lives forever but not so little boys, Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys." also makes wonder, if it really is just about a boy who grew up and got too old for his toys.

Sorry i dont know any information for sure, but i hope this helps. =)
