The best are Sans-Serif fonts for viewing text:
Tahoma
Verdana
Sans-Serif
But Serif fonts are quite useful for titles or for texts that need to stand out:
Georgia
Garamond
Avoid Times New Roman in this category, as it has an un-professional look about it - probably because it has been the default browser font for over a decade.

I've used arial. My problem is not the font but the size. I don't go to a lot of sites I'm sent to because the print is too small for viewing.

Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, Tahoma
- For everyday text. Clear and readable.
Courier
- For code. Fixed width is very important for this purpose.
Times New Roman
- If I want my site to look like a 1995 Geocities reject.
Comic Sans
- Just because it's got "comic" in the name, doesn't make it cute. It sucks. It's ugly. Please people, stop.

If you're creating a webpage, it's preferred to not set the fonts but let the browser's settings control the font and only to control the size and emphasis of the font in the code.

Verdana is used mostly and then arial but the fonts need to be re-sizable and not fixed so fonts size should be specified in ems and not in pixels.

Arial. Particularly Arial Bold. I tend to find people who are trying to be fun use Comic Sans S and, you know, that's ok too.
