As far as i know Fidel is still alive but has suffered ill health in recent years, most notably a series of falls.Obviously the Cuban hierachy like to play this down due to the nature of the regime

No the evidence seems to be that he is still alive. I strongly suspect he is terminally ill however--something like cancer.
