I want to buy a consumer grade piano for my kid. I don't know anything about piano. But one thing I am certain is that I don't want to pay for the brand name. Hope that you can give me some recommendations.

Number 1 recommendation, if he/she is just learning, go for a used piano. Call schools in your local area, many of them are selling their pianos since the music programs at the schools are being "trimmed" back. Also call churches/colleges/universities to see if they know of anyplace, keep an eye on the classified in your area too. It isn't necessary to have a new piano to learn, if it turns out that they love it and that they have potential to be a great pianist then upgrade, this way you aren't out several hundred dollars for something that collects dust.
