I had my desktop wich is a wireless connection, shared with my laptop that usieng a dsl, cable now i need to do it again but I don't know how to assign an I.P. addy to my laptop.

the best thing to do for wireless is to let the router/wifi modem allocate your ip address. this should be in the wireless settings for the router and you can also pick it by opening the wireless connection properties on your laptop and select internet protocols te properties again and then select obtain ip address automaticallay as well as DNS automatically

All routers can hand out IP addresses using DHCP. Read your router's docs, it's all explained there.
