Just wondering - if it's a psychological human phenomenon, we should be able to prevent it; but if it's something brought on by civilization, what do we do?

Dang, this question of yours is going to keep me up for a few hours....!

I'm fond of medieval social history and am not familiar with much in the criminal subculture that could possibly be described as a "gang"----although bands of brigands have been around for years, don't think there was really a matter of heavy-duty identification with the group back then....

Might be a civilization-related condition: high concentrations of disaffected, underemployed persons in an area....

There has always been violence, but either people don't care to read history books or just choose to think that is just the way things are...

Probably was gang violence, except that instead of gangs it was bands of bandits, they probably fought for control over trade routes to plunder.

Absolutetly!
Don't forget that the main reason for Crusades, was that the King of France wanted all these Knights-gangsters out of his kingdom!

Yes ~ only they were called other names ~ not so many people then so things weren't as bad but some of the torture was.

You bet! One lord had all of his peasants rallied to fight another lords peasants. The peasants rallied behind their particular nobleman. Strength in numbers, it can be traced to prehistoric man.
