Why do older people have a penchant in moving their jaws, looking like they are eating something when they are not? Are they playing around with their dentures, cleaning their teeth with their tongue or thinking of eating? I observe that they can do this action for a very long time non-stop? Why???

I don't think it's the dentures, because my nana doesn't have any and I notice she does this a lot too.
It seems to occur when she is worried, concerned about something or deep in thought.
I think it's just a habit that develops.. i know young people who do this also- and aren't things like this more likely to occur when you have more time on your hands (ie. retired)?

It is their dentures. Sometimes they don't fit any longer and are loose. Since most elderly can't afford to go to the dentist to have new ones made, they just "play with them" so to speak. I do think it can become a habit without them realizing it. Also, they could be thirsty and with a dry mouth, it makes it difficult to keep you dentures in place.

i'm no longer advantageous approximately what you're referencing... "shifting their jaws backward and forward"... are they "chewing"? i'm in ordinary terms 33 years previous yet I easily have that difficulty. while i develop into in my early 20's I had all of my tooth bumped off even although maximum did no longer could desire to be (very long tale lol). It develop into somewhat worrying and that i nevertheless have nightmares approximately it. in any case... i eventually have been given dentures yet HATED the decrease ones. they did no longer decide to stay in and that i could no longer whistle while donning them. So even although I positioned on my uppers each and all of the time (even to mattress) no longer having any lowers has placed an excellent form of tension on my jaw. and probably as a results of fact I used to grind my tooth the habit carried over, yet now my jaw has further to bypass. I easily have TMJ as a results of fact of all of this, yet I nevertheless grind my "tooth" (only in front although). I easily have brutal issues very practically 24/7. If i'm in public, the "chewing/grinding" is finished at a minimum as a results of fact i understand how retarded it makes me look lol, yet I often ought to open my mouth to "pop" my jaw. The "chewing/grinding" is mostly a "self-comforting" habit like thumb sucking is for some human beings, so it somewhat is extra important while the guy's under tension. And if this is observed only as quickly as a individual eliminates their dentures, possibly their flexing their jaw (the mobility is fairly diverse). possibly that's what you're touching on? If no longer, sorry for this form of long submit approximately no longer something lol.
