There are a myriad of reasons why people get married. Getting married however varies from person to person. Others need marriage while others do not classify it as a need.
Why do we need to get marry? The obvious reason is that marriage provides us companionship. We look forward to spending our life with the one we love. Through marriage, we will be able to intimately associate ourselves with our love one. Marriage also is a manifestation of commitment. We are social being so we need to coexist with other beings. Hence, when we commit ourselves to the one we love, we only prove how men can't live alone. The unpopular reason why we need to marry is for sexual pleasure. It may sound promiscuous but there's a logic behind it. Since we are sexual beings, then sex translate to be a necessity. Sex, can even be included in the physiological needs that Abraham Maslow has designed.
Well, the last thing I can think of why we need to marry is for social conformity. When I say social conformity, I talk about our cultural dictates, which among others include religion. Most religions' dogma preach the need for people to marry. According to the bible for instance, God has commanded His people to go ye and multiply. Some people marry because of this teaching. Along with religious influence, we are also pressured by our environment. If all your peers are married and you are not, you'll be pressured to tie the knot. Worse, people will accuse you of being a homosexual. Other social pressure includes the idea of conforming with what other's have done, have been doing and is doing. You don't like to be isolated from the rest of the society, so for the sake of conformity, you need to get married.
All these pyschological, cultural, environmental and social reasons common among people who get married are the reasons why people look at marriage as a need. There are however exceptions to these. Like those non-conformist and the likes. Well, that would mean a different answer for that case.
Hope that will help you.
Cheers.

You don't need to get married. It's easier to walk away if you aren't married. If marriage is done for the right reasons, it can be an act of love because it says to the world you want to say together and be faithful to each other. In the end marriage can and does get misunderstood because one or both partners may assume ownership of the other when it is actually a partnership. It's this assumed ownership that does most of the damage to marriages. A bad marriage has at least one selfish partner.

Yes, so the spouse has security (in law), as an act of commitment, so the children aren't bastards (oh! is that not PC as there are so many around now?, shame I think they should put it on the birth certificates, might put off a few chav's from breeding!), so the children have the same surname as BOTH parents. And I'm not even Christian to go into that side of things.

Unless you are in the states illegally you do not NEED to marry. But there are so many benefits as far as insurance, filing taxes, visitation rights, child custody rights...and so on that go along with marriage that people want.

nobody NEEDS to get married, it just shows that little bit more commitment to each other to make it legal, and the wedding day is good for dressing up eating and drinking

You don't!
If you don't feel like you WANT to get married then don't let anyone make you feel as if you NEED to.

We do not need.It is better to be free.Marriage is a product of society not of love (family, government, clergy and business -they have interest in marriage arrangements).
If you have deep interest in matter you can consult Predatory Female by Shannon Lawrence or Manipulate Man by Esther Vilar. If you feel it is not for you stay away.Good luck
