The reason why you get mixed answers is because scientist who invented it dont even know how it wrks! Its unknown all that is known is that it wrks. I have mirena so I have no period seems like my body gets stuck on day 10-20 and repeats itself. say this bc I go thur the whole I want to have sex everyday all times a day (ovulation phase nature designed it this way) and then to the PMS moodiness cravings but no period.

So its speculated it doesn't let a fertilized egg implant and just aborts it which if that was the case I haven't had a period so that theory dosent apply to me.

another speculation is that it redirects sperm whether it be the cooper in it or the hormones in it.

Another is it blocks the entrance for the egg to expel and or the sperm 2 enter

The IUD is inserted into the base of the uterus, just through the cervix. You will ovulate and have your periods, but you will not get pregnant because the womb feels there is something foreign already in it. So your body will reject any eggs that may have been fertilized and you will have a normal period. But, having an IUD makes it much more difficult for the sperm to get through into the uterus to the egg, so that reduces any chance of pregnancy in the first place.
I have had my IUD for a year and am thrilled to bits with it. Good luck!

you could go to a website like mayoclinic.com or webmd.com and research IUD's. i believe it prevents any fertilization of an embryo in the uterine walls.
