Pen drives work on an awsome little thing called flash memory - A special type of memory chip that maintains its contents even when the host machine such as a handheld computer is switched off.

Now data is written in ones and zeros right. This is an extract from how stuff works explaining it. I couldn't say it better so i coppied it.

Inside the chip is a grid of columns and rows, with a two-transistor cell at each intersecting point on the grid. The two transistors are separated by a thin oxide layer. One of the transistors is known as the floating gate, and the other one is the control gate. The floating gate's only link to the row, or wordline, is through the control gate. As long as this link is in place, the cell has a value of "1."

To change the cell value to a "0" requires a curious process called Fowler-Nordheim tunneling. Tunneling is used to alter the placement of electrons in the floating gate. An electrical charge, usually between 10 and 13 volts, is applied to the floating gate. The charge comes from the column, or bitline, enters the floating gate and drains to a ground

Some brands you might want to look at are:
Sony, Sandisk, corsair, kensington, verbatim, and then any of your lesser known brands. They are all ok - my personal choice is the San Disk. They just seem more resistant to data loss.

Hope that helps. I put a few links below where i got my info.

It uses flash memory and the USB port to act like a virtual disk drive to your compuer. The computer thinks it is a disk drive with moving parts, but flash memory has no movingg parts. Flash memory is a bubble memory which is retained without power when unplugged, unlike regular computer memory. But it is more expensive too.

a pen drive is a memory storage device, the information is saved into microchip, there are many different companies that manufacture them, search www.froogle.com for 'pen drive'

It is essentially a small stick of RAM with a capacitor(battery) that keeps it in storage instead of magnetically or optically laying it onto a disk. When you plug in your drive, the battery recharges and the data stays safe.
