I live in a 1976 condo. I have recently remodeled by bathroom to include a washer dryer. The Board found out about it and they want me to take out the washer/dryer plus restore the bathroom to its original plumbing. Can the Board do this? I thought the Board can act only on common areas. Is the plumbing on the bathroom considered common area?

What does your HOA manual say? If you don't have a copy or you think your copy might be outdated - ask the HOA for the written policy. It could be that you simply violated written policy or failed to get proper permission.

My grandmother is getting ready to remodel the bathrooms in her condo and she was required to present plans and bids to the HOA for approval.

Keep in mind that your remodel may not be overly problematic - but there could be serious consequences if multiple people chose to do the same remodels.

As a former apartment manager - I can tell you that plumbing changes can wreak havoc. All plumbing in your building is interconnected -- so yes - it could be considered common area.

Also - Have you checked the city code for your washer/dryer installation? Your building may not be able to accomodate the extra drains required by code. I'll bet the local code requires you to vent your dryer outside and the exterior walls of the buildings are most definitely considered common area.

Hey you,

I have a condo and when you first purchased it, they should have given you the bylaws (a huge book) with all of the written regulations in it. It is a must for all condo owners, and I'm sure you got one. Look for it, if not, ask your neighbor for a copy or just take a look at your neighbors. Everything should be spelled out in the bylaws. If it is not in it, then you are in your legal right to keep the washer/dryer. If not, then the HOA can force you to remove it. First is to check with the bylaw booklet.

Also, all HOA Bylaws are DIFFERENT! Some can prohibit changes to plumbing inside of your unit. The best thing is to check the book. My particular condo prohibits any changes to the exterior of the building, garage, storage space, and plumbing INSIDE of my unit -
Good luck.

It depends on whether you own or are renting. If you own the condo, you can have the inside done however the h%$& you WANT it! If you rent, then they have the final say.Offer to pay 10.00 more a month if they are afraid it'll increase the water bill! Why can't people just let people be! My Lord!...Good luck. I'd be tempted to read the lease agreement to see if anything in there stipulates "re-plumbing". If not, you may have a leg to stand on. Check w/the ,local inspectors & see what's "up to code" if you are worried.

Depends on all that was previously posted. I don't understand why anyone wants to live in a HOA. I've heard more horror stories from them than good. I'd also be curious as to how they found out about all that......Sounds like you got a snitch in your midst lol...Good luck!
