the updater inside the contol panel only says i need ipod software as an update. After searching through apple for info- it says to download 9.0 then 9.1- but nothing about going from a bad 9.2 and backwards

EDIT: Stay with us here, Mikey, we're here to help you! Apple DOES care - their Tech Support is the BEST! Technology evolves entirely too fast for the market, hence, "new" hardware is already obsolete within 6 months if that - software less than that.

I think that you would be better off starting from scratch so, I suggest either:

A. Calling Apple Care Service for a OS 9.1 for a Restore Disk which will bring the OS back to the original factory settings. Since you do not have any data, there is nothing to backup. Apple Care Service Line 1-800-275-2273 6AM - 6PM PST
or
B. Purchase a full copy of the MAC OS 9.1

Hi again Mikey! Try the following for the CD-ROM issue

Shreve Systems has the OS 9.2.1 CD if it is needed.

Return to the Outlet you Purchased it from-They should Provide you with the Correct Operating System!
Or go to Apple.com and download the current Version.

Inside Your System Preferences there is a Software updates Page-it allows you to Automatically Update and Search for Updates in the Background while you are working!
