Girls naturally like to talk. If you ask how her day was, she'll give you everything that happened that day, how she felt about the events.. etc. Just let her know that you don't expect an essay on how her day went, but that you just wanted to know that everything went alright and that you'd like to get some comments in there, too.

I smile at this question and wonder why aren't things like this taught in early learning classes from the perhaps middle school level so that people can learn to understand each other. The female is hardwired in the brain to be more talkative and the male is less talkative. He is also not capable of hearing everything that the female has. On the other hand, through multitasking activities going on in the brain, the female is able to hear everything and remember exactly what someone says and thus goes the saying "dont argue with a woman, you'll lose everytime." On a daily basis, it is said that a woman may speak approx. 30, 000 words vs. the 7,000 words a man may speak.
If these topics were taught in school as a requirement, people would be able to understand and get along with each other better, perhaps. Life might be much more enjoyable for everyone if we shared more of the things of life that we need to know about each other and ourselves.
I think if men knew and understood more about women and vice versa, divorce could lessen in numbers. After all, what other sex is there to learn about because society does the studies but does not put it out in ways that everyone can benefit from.
And other topics in psychology should be taught early on in school (ie., bullying and why, different attitudes one projects, self-worth, jealousy and envy, where you are in life is where you are suppose to be at that moment for self assessment, etc.) Now a good question to ask (and not to be taken negatively) but why is it that generally guys never think they do anything wrong? And why is it they never like to ask directions? Why do men always think they are right all the time? We need to learn about our brains and how they are hardwired to understand the difference between male and female.
Lastly, but if you talked half as much, then she would not do all the talking. Women were made for talking. Check it out for yourself. Most women are motor mouths but we need to understand why they are that way. Do your research, it will help you in the long run.

Say "Listen...do you hear that?... It sounded like a gun shot". Then say, "yo hold up a minute, I think I left something on the stove". Or set an alarm on your cell phone to go off 3 minutes after you start talkin. Then tell her you have to take the call. It will at least break the momentum and hopefully change the subject.

Sometimes people are so emotionally lonely that the smallest kindness is overwhelming and they just get so nervous that they talk uncontrollably. Be nice and try to let her know that you want to be her friend. After a while she will slow down with her talking and the real person inside will unfold like a Caterpillar turns into a butterfly.

being a girl telling me what i want to hear usually works but in your case just tell her to give you a run down of her day without the details. Tell her no offense but if you want to know the details you'll ask. Or you could tell her that you are not trying to write a book just make conversation.

Next time you see her make sure the 2 of you are doing something where she won't be hacking her face off. The 2 of you should go bike riding all day, that will keep you focused and unable to talk.

Unless of course your willing to consider homicide but thats a little extreme isnt it.
Just nod at her and make "uh-huh" noises on a regular basis.
She'll get fed up long before you do and it will preserve your sanity.

A woman thinks that you really want to know the answer, otherwise why would you ask? So if you don't want to know, don't ask.
