there is no "best". It depends on your criteria.
Arguably,
Red Hat is the most stable
Ubuntu is the most user friendly
SuSE has the most latest software
Debian is the most dynamic

etc.

If you are a newbie to linux, you shouldn't have to find the best linux distribution, just try and install some linux.
Redhat, SuSE, Mandriva, Debian or Ubuntu i think is good.

It's too difficult which is the best among the others,
Redhat user will say, their are the best, the other too will say they are the best too. so it's always depend on you.

If you ask for some advice , i will suggest you to install uBuntu (i use uBuntu in one of my computer) it's more 'User Friendly', and have all software that you need, word processor, excel like, multimedia, internet, etc.

You can try to find the comparison in internet.
