To simplify.....female mosquitoes use blood proteins for the production of eggs, and deposit them in or on the water. The female aftre laying the eggs never returns to the water to check on them or to feed them again....she never sees her larvae again. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae are free-living organisms that will feed on algae and detritus in the water column....
Hope this ansers your question.....

Female mosquitos require a blood meal for egg development. They can lay 100-300 eggs at one time (yikes! that explains a lot),
Adults will feed on juice from fruits and flower nectar. The larvae will feed on algae. The pupae will not feed (not until they've graduated to larvae in a week or so).
To control them, make a bird-friendly back yard and add nesting boxes for bats .. bats love the little critters! So do Purple Martins. Forget the mosquito repelling plants. Citronella candles work well, if you have enough of them, but bug zappers do not.
The new rubbery, coiled wear-once-and-toss bracelets work pretty well for short periods (less than a hour). Ditto Avon's Skin-So-Soft; it works for less than an hour, but it does work.
I found that ultrasonic devices keep people at a pretty good distance, but not mosquitos. (Just my luck: tone-deaf mosquitos.)
Although it is recommended now, not long ago DEET was considered to be very toxic and the government warned against its use. It is toxic, to be sure, but the new diseases mosquitos carry make the risks a trade-off.
Whatever you do, do NOT use permethrin. It is a neurotoxin!

The female mosquito uses the blood, not the larvae. She is probably dead by the time they have hatched. Incidently, some mosqitoes use the increased level of CO2 in exhaled air to help find you. If you move the air around you, say, with a gentle fan, it will disperse the CO2. This could be important particularly when you are asleep. Try it and see if you get bitten less.

Female mosquitoes drink blood to use the protein in it to lay their eggs.Their larvae dont drink blood, they feed on micro-organisms on the water surface, and therefore the females dont give the larvae blood, and therefore they dont need to their larvae. The females usually die after laying the eggs.
