The forementioned "The term refers to a truck driver when he is only driving the tractor without pulling a trailer." is correct. Used in a sentence,"Yeah, I'm bob tailing from the shop over to the factory to pick up my next load" or "That bob tail sure is hoggin' the hammer lane".

Bob-TAIL..is trucker slang for a cab without a trailer...therefore a bobtail driver may be someone who JUST drives cabs around. Perhaps from one pickup to another, but not actually picking up the loaded trailer...

Bob tailing is when a semi tractor trailer drops his trailer, and
then he or she drives the tractor to go pick up another trailer.
They probably aren't making any money if there aren't pulling
a trailer.

it is bob-tail not tale. anyway a bob tail truck is also called a straight truck or box truck. they are medium size with say a 16 to 24 foot box on it. They are used mostly for small deliveries or in cities where larger trucks can't fit.
