Is it legal for the cashiers to beg customers to donate to their literacy fund? The cashier said if she didn't get a certain amount each day by the end of her shift,,she would get a warning from the manager...Some people simple can not afford to give their spare change..Is it possible to lose your job just because people can't give a donation?

No, it's not legally possible to lose your job at Dollar General if other folks can't/don't/won't give a donation.

It sounds like the cashier you had was having other issues w/her manager; but in no way can managers try & force donations out of customers, through their employees.

If the cashier's main job was professional fund-raising---& she signed a binding agreement to raise X-Amount of funds within a certain time-frame---then she could receive an official warning/demotion/etc.

That, however, is not the case, here.
You were right to question the validity of your cashier's fund-raising claims.

This is an excellent question, especially with the Holiday Season just around the corner.

We all want to be more generous in our giving; but no one wants to be taken advantage of.

I wouldn't think so. Dollar General has those cups around here at stores but the cashier never asks for a donation. I don't like being asked for a donation when I'm shopping.

I am poor myself. When someone asks me for a donation (the last one was Jerry's kids) I said "Why don't you get Jerry to donate to my kids?" It irritates me for someone to beg for anything. I would love to help and sometimes I do, but I won't do it if they ask me.
