This is the first and best science experiment I ever did.
Get some paper and a pen.
Light a candle.
Write down observations of the candle. As you see them. Things anyone would see.
Here's the point -- you have to have at least 25 observations of that candle.
Yes, this is an experiment becuase you are OBSERVING something objectively and the work can be repeated by someone else. The key to science is the experiment that tests the hypothesis, and the key to being good at performing experiments is being a great observer.
If you want, you can mail your 25 observations to me and I'll make some comments. This is a SIMPLE but incredibly IMPORTANT experiment to perform.

You can try this experiment. First, you fill a bowl with cold water. Then, put 1 tablespoon of water into an empty can. After that, heat the can over a stove to boil the water. Use the tongs to hold the can. Then, let the water boil for about 30 seconds. After that, quickly turn the can upside down and dip it into the bowl fill with cold water. The can will collapse almost immediately. That is because the pressure of the air outside the can is greater than the pressure inside. This causes the air inside to crush the can.

When I was a kid, I built a radio out of cardboard, tin foil, diodes, wire, and a small amplifier. I'm sure there are instructions out there somewhere. You can even be a human antenna!
I learned a lot about electrical curcuits and AM vs. FM radio waves. It's not really that hard to do.
Another cool experiment is a pinhole camera - look that one up too. They can be as involved as you like. You can develop the film / paper yourself or take it to a photo lab.

Sodium Hydroxide and Aluminum foil is always fun. Foil from the kitchen and sodium hydroxide from drain cleaner (eg. Red Devil Lye). When combined an exothermic reaction results that generates hydrogen gas that can be collected to fill a balloon. I did this many times as a kid. The balloon will float because hydrogen gas is lighter than air, but it's very flammable, so be careful. :)

howling jelly baby experiment
heat potassium chlorate V, until liquid. drop in jelly baby or other gelatin based sweet or candy. stand back and what the candy burn like mad.
this experiment is best performed in a fume cupboard, and you will need supervision. it is a great one for showing how we 'get' energy from food.
i believe there are videos of this experiment on the web, try you tube
