In some (most?) parts of Australia we call them runners.

It is regional vernacular. Technically they are two different things. Sneakers is used throughout the east while tennis shoes is used in the west.

As a kid I was told they were called sneakers because you could walk much quieter than shoes with a hard sole. Like sneaking up on someone.

Because you can't hear them when you walk. Like being sneaky. So we call them sneakers. Most sneaker wearers call them by what they were made for if you want to specify.

Because they do not make noise like heeled or hard soled shoes make.
In the south, they are referred to as "running shoes" when getting married.....the joke being wear your running shoes, so you can escape the wedding.

Sneakers is the American way.
In South Africa we call them takkies.
In the UK trainers.

They all mean the same thing though.

here we call them gym shoues its all a matter of where you are as to what they call them.
