ok lye shot 3 times as many baskets as cliff
so we call the number of baskets that cliff shot "x"
so now we see that lye shot 3 times as many as cliff
so therefore no.of baskets lye shot =3*x
and we also see that kyle shot 12 more baskets then cliff
so the number of kyles baskets =12+x baskets
so we know kyles and lyes are eqal and therefore
3*x=12+x
then we solve for x
as such first we bring all the x's to one side
as such

3x-x=12+x-x
2x=12
then we divide by 2 to solve for x
2x/2=12/2
x=6

the answer is six
if you would like to check to make sure then put it into the original equations and see if it works out

the equation x+3x=x+12 makes sense. It comes out to x=4. When you check it, it adds up, but it doesn't really add up with the question, because if cliff shot 4 baskets,then lye shot 3 times as many and that would be 12. Kyle shot 12 more than cliff, which would be 16. So, in this case Lyle and Kyle did not shoot the same number of baskets. I believe the answer is Cliff shot six. Kyle shot 12 more, which is18, and Lyle shot 3 times as many as cliff wich is 18. so kyle and Lyle both shot 18. Theres your answer.

Let Cliff shot x baskets,Therefore baskets shot by Kyle is x+12 and the ones shot by Lye is 3x.According to the problem3x=x+12 =>3x-x=12 => 2x=12. Therefore x=6 Hence baskets shot byCliff=6 baskets shot by Kyle=6+12=18 ,and baskets shot by lye=3 X6=18

The answer is 6 baskets. Here are the steps:
Set x = the number of baskets Cliff shot
Lyle shot 3 times as many baskets as Cliff, so he shot 3 times x or 3x
Kyle shot 12 more baskets than Cliff, so he shot x + 12
Both Lyle and Kyle shot the same number of baskets, so you can make this the equation: 3x = x+12
Then solve it!
3x-x = 12
2x = 12
x = 12/2
x = 6
Then check for logic. 3 x 6 = 18, and 6+12 = 18.
Voila!

K-Kyle, L-Lye, C-Cliff
L=3C
K=C+12
K=L
Combined them to make an equation
C+12=3C
-C -C
12=2C
divide by 2
C=6
So: L= 3(6)
L=18
K=6+12
K=18
Hope this helps.
