Check your local two-year college. They usually offer more practical courses than the four-year college, including some that are not college-level and take far less time than two years. There are far too many offerings to enumerate and it all depends what you are interested in.

It is my observation that people in construction make more than anybody else in a practical field. To move up and be on your own, however, you need a college education. A case in point is Harold Corker, a University of Tennessee graduate who is a former mayor of Chattanooga and now a candidate for the Senate from Tennessee. He started his first company with $800 in savings and has so many millions now that he has been able to pour many millions into his campaign.

It's not that you'll regret it later, though you might, it's that most jobs pay more if you have a degree. For instance, my father is a mechanic in a factory. He gets paid decent, but a friend of his who does the same job and has a degree gets paid a substantial amount more.

It all depends on what you want to do. I mean, there is the obvious; fast food, retail, customer service, tech support, and so on...but those are not really jobs that would pay the bills. Jobs like electrician, mechanic, hair stylist, network cabling specialist at least require you to go to trade school and get credentials and skill. It's really up to you, but I suggest at least going to some kind of trade school. You don't want to have to struggle for the rest of your life.

Someone above mentioned police...sorry to inform you, but NYPD requires at least 2 years of college or military service. Most city or government jobs require college or military equivalent, just so you know. Check out nyc.gov for links.

If you like driving, you could try becoming a truck driver. A training course will run you about $3k - $4k out of pocket, then you can use their job placement services to find a driving job. Or you could do the direct-hire route. Call a major carrier like Schneider or Swift or JB Hunt and apply for on-the-job training. They pay for your training and you work for them. If you quit before your contract is up, you pay for your training out of pocket. Annual income potential for a first year driver is about $35k - $40k. But you really, really, really have to LOVE driving to sign up to drive 11 hours a day, 6 days a week with few breaks. And you really, really, really have to LOVE living where you work because you sleep in the truck, you eat in the truck, you drive in the truck, you live in the truck -- the truck is your life.
