I like this question. I have asked something similar. I think people tend to rate things high if they agree with it. Not whether or not it is a good question or answer. I think intelligence rarely fits in to it. It's mostly based on emotion. Same goes for choosing an answer. Especially in the section Religion and spirituality. Because it is such an emotional section. Have a nice day.

Thumbs up or thumbs down, in some ways it gives us an idea of how others appreciate our questions or answers. Although we shouldn't be bothered with it. We all think differently.

I love giving the thumbs up, makes me feel like The Fonz. Occasionaly I give the thumbs down to someone who is being very abusive or graphic - most of the time I try to skip those questions.

I only give a thumbs down if the people are being a smart*ss, or hurtful, or if they are SO idiotic in their answer that the people will be worse off after that advice than before.
e.g.- How do I get off of a ladder? "Jump from the top. It worked for me. I have good shoes."

i could understand receiving "thumbs down" if i gave a smart *ss answer to a legitimate question, or if i was downright mean and nasty for no reason. but if it's "thumbs down" because others differ from my opinion, i am on your side. where is that fountain of ultimate knowledge that tells them they are right vs anyone else? i give up. but what do i know? better give me another thumbs down.

I usually give thumbs ups. But sometimes, the person's answers is completly not what the asker had in mind. Or they say something really unecessery.
